‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ star pens music and lyrics to project, Loretta Devine and Ledisi named as potential cast
“The Preacher’s Wife” will be reimagined in the form of a Broadway musical–that is if efforts made by actor Tituss Burgess are successful.
The star of the hit Netflix comedy series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” has acquired the rights to the 1996 film classic–which starred Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington–and is on a mission to give fans a new spin.
Burgess, 37, has already composed and written the music and lyrics to the project.
An industry reading of the musical will be presented in New York City starring Loretta Devine and Ledisi, reports Playbill.
The musical is described as “the story of one woman (Julia’s) journey to find her voice and strengthen her husband (the Preacher) and larger church community during a moment of financial crisis and emotional overwhelm. In a fast-gentrifying Harlem when they’re at risk of losing their church and their hope, an Angel appears and reminds them that a church is not a building, but the people who inhabit it and the love they share.”
Burgess is no stranger to Broadway, having made his debut back in 2005 for his role in “Good Vibrations.” He starred in “Jersey Boys,” “The Littel Mermaid” and “Guys and Dolls.”
