Kipper Jones, featuring Corney Mims and The Knowitallz will headline the entertainment.
The history of Kipper Jones is a timeline through the history of the modern Black music industry. Motown trained as a session singer at 15, during the last of the Berry Gordy era. As part of the venerable R&B/Funk outfit, TEASE, recorded for CBS/Epic Records under legendary record executive, Larkin Arnold. Tutored and directed by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Kenneth ˜Babyface’ Edmonds, and celebrated R&B icon, Luther Vandross. Performed and recorded with a multi-generational mix of industry lore; Johnny Mathis, The Winans, Brian Wilson, Anita Baker, Teddy Pendergrass, Brian McKnight, Teena Marie, Eric Clapton, Charlie Wilson, Lauryn Hill, and even Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Sly Stone. But it’s been as a songwriter where the legend of Kipper Jones is most associated. From crafting the platinum initial offering of superstar singer/actress, Vanessa Williams, (The Right Stuff), as well as the double platinum follow-up, The Comfort Zone, to the landmark 5 million selling Atlantic Records debut, brandy, which yielded the 1 platinum Kipper Jones compositions, “I Wanna Be Down”, “Brokenhearted”, and the record setting, “Baby”.
Corney Mims & The Knowitallz is one of L.A.’s ultimate live old school R & B/ Funk retrospective bands. Cornelius “Corney” Mims has performed live, in studio, and on television with well-known artists throughout the music industry. His list of credits reads like a who’s who of the music industry’s elite. Names like Michael Jackson, Kenny Loggins, Natalie Cole, En Vogue, George Michael, Brandy, Phil Collins, Snoop Dogg and Beyonce only scratch the surface of his musical accomplishments.
Additional entertainment from Sophisticated Dance, DJ Alcatraz, Hearts of Gold, Henry Johnson As Iz Band, Dembrebrah West African Drum & Dance Ensemble, Richard “88 Fingers” Turner, Jr., Charles Turner, Daryl Darden “The Legend of St. Louis’ Trio.
The family event will include food and vendor booths, children’s play area, great prizes, Simeon B. Ginyard’s Roll Bounce Classic Car Show, historical and cultural displays and more.
African-American Quilters of Los Angeles will be on-site, highlighting historically profound quilts. Founded 27 years ago, their multi-ethnic membership of 160 is comprised of both men and women of all ages. The guild first came together after an exhibit of African American quilts held in the California Afro-American Museum in Exposition Park of Los Angeles. The mission of the AAQLA is to bring awareness of the historical value of African-American quilts, as well as to celebrate and continue the tradition of quilting.
